I’m trying to make £100k in a year –  but these four side hustles DON’T work

A TikToker aiming to make £100,000 within a year of quitting his job has revealed four popular ‘side hustles’ that were not for him.

The video titled ‘side hustles that don’t work’ was posted by @maxmakingbank shortly after he started his attempt to make six figures in 12 months with a newly formed travel business supplemented by something on the side.

Max said he had left behind an 11-year corporate career in the hope of a lucrative and online business of his own.

He issued the ‘ quick disclaimer’ that some of his failed moneymaking attempts will work for other people, but had not for him.

The first on the list was running a shop on Etsy or doing ‘print on demand’ (POD) – meaning that you sell a printed product online but only order stock once you have had an order yourself.

‘This is something that I tried right at the beginning of my side hustle journey and I hated it to be honest with you,’ Max revealed.

‘I’m quite a creative person, but I just wasn’t invested in the products that I could find online that could be printed on demand.’

POD takes a similar form of business model to dropshipping, which many have claimed to be a source of huge sums of money in the past.

It separates the responsibilities of advertising, sales and customer service, and those of manufacturing and supply, between two companies, so the selling party never actually holds its ‘stock’.

While many online boast of making thousands of pounds per month with the technique, others say it’s ‘not that easy’.

What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where the dropshipping store front does not actually stock the product it sells.

When a customer buys a product from the dropshipping retailer, the retailer purchases the item from a third party, either the manufacturer, wholesaler or different retailer, who then ships it to the customer.

The dropshippers store front effectively acts as the middle-man between customer and manufacturer.

Dropshippers make money by selling the product for more than they pay for it, and having advertisements on their store website.

  • Low start-up and maintenance costs for the business
  • Flexible location and working hours
  • Offers customers a wide selection of products
  • Retailers don’t have to manage inventory

  • If your supply line becomes too long profit margins may become lower
  • It can be difficult to check stock levels
  • Low control over customer experience
  • Difficulty with suppliers

Similarly, his second ‘really, really popular’ secondary source of income which he said had not worked for him was Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).

‘I know there are a lot of people that make an absolute fortune off this,’ Max said.

This method of moneymaking is where you hand over storing, picking, packing and shipping of your products to the e-commerce giant, in theory to streamline your personal workflow and allow you to get more done.

‘But honestly,’ Max continued, ‘my head just hurt looking at all the Amazon stuff that you’ve got to fill in and complete and learn.’

His next scheme was a faceless TikTok account where he would repost short clips from longer form videos.

‘I just didn’t put enough time into it to be honest,’ he said.

However, given that Max’s goal was to find a source of secondary income on top of running a business, a time-consuming endeavor would not tick the right boxes no matter how profitable it was.

His final failed side hustle which he mentioned was reselling the contents of return pallets.

These are like mystery boxes of items returned by customers of retailers such as Amazon, which you can then buy from wholesalers to resell the contents of.

Max admitted that he made 'quite a bit of money' reselling the contents of return pallets, but it is not good for people who are not starting from a position with little funds (stock photo)

However, given the element of unknown, profit is no guarantee.

‘This is actually something that I have made quite a bit of money from,’ said Max, ‘however, what you can get from the boxes is really hit and miss.

‘I had a few that came and had some really great products and managed to sell them for quite a bit of money, but the last pallet that I had was utter garbage and a lot of it had to go to the tip.

‘So, whilst it’s good in some aspects, I think you’ve got to be very careful and if you’ve got a limited amount of money to start with, that’s probably not your best bet.’
