Inside the spooky Enfield Haunting house where teenage girl was photographed ‘levitating above her bed’ in terrifying 1970s ‘poltergeist’ case (but North London family living there now haven’t experienced anything out of this world!)

The story of the Enfield Haunting captivated the world when two sisters revealed the presence of a poltergeist in the suburban semi-detached home.

Now 284 Green Street in North London will once again be the centre of attention when a new Apple TV documentary examines the spooky goings on behind the front door of the house.

Ahead of the film, MailOnline was given exclusive access to the property to re-visit the rooms where a teenage girl was photographed apparently levitating above her bed.

All traces of the decor from the 1970s have gone and a mother-of four who now lives in the house insists she has never experienced anything out of this world taking place.

It was in the late 1970s that the Hodgson family became instantly famous when they revealed what had taken place in the three-bedroom property opposite a primary school in the borough of Enfield.

Teenager Janet Hodgson said she had been taken over by the spirit of an old man who once lived in the house and was even photographed levitating above her bed by a newspaper photographer sent to investigate the bizarre goings on.

They also claimed objects would suddenly fly across the room when being moved by an unseen ghost.

The apparent haunting has led to Hollywood film, TV shows and later this month a play starring Catherine Tate about what took place behind the front door of the non-descript property.

Sceptics have always insisted the Hodgson family had staged all the paranormal activity.

Much has changed at 284 Green Street since the Hodgson family became the centre of worldwide attention from ghost hunters when they claimed a poltergeist was present.

The front bedroom where Janet Hodgson was photographed levitating above her bed bears no resemblance to how it looked in 1977.

There are no posters of 70s heartthrob David Soul and other pop stars, with any spare room now taken up by wardrobes and clothes. The ceiling appears to have been lowered.

The small kitchen has been modernised with a new cooker and washing machine compared to how it looked in 1977.

The church going mother who lives in the house with her children aged from four to 16 said she had been warned by the council that the house was haunted when they took on the tenancy five years ago.

‘The council had warned us that the house was haunted. But I am a God fearing woman and wasn’t worried,’ she said.

‘They did ask me if I was worried and I told them it didn’t concern me.

‘But the first time we stepped into the house to look around I did feel goosebumps. That was it. I did not feel any evil spirits and there has never been a ghost.

‘I don’t really believe in ghosts, and anyway God will always protect me. If I did not have God on my side I would not have taken the house.’

The mother, who asked not to identified, said she has frequently to turn away ghost hunters almost everyday requesting to look inside.

Curtains are pulled across the downstairs and upstairs windows to stop people looking in.

‘We have had people from China and other countries who just turn up and bang on the front door. Some ghost hunters have even turned up at 3am and want to be let in.

‘They want to come in and see for themselves. I just send them away, and have had to call the police.

‘They all want to look round the house, but this is where we live and I do not want them here.’

The woman, who is originally from Lagos, Nigeria, said she has watched some of the TV films about the Enfield Haunting, including ‘Conjuring 2’ which is based on what took place in her living room and bedrooms.

Recalling her first visit, she said: I am a Christian woman, and I know God will protect me. If there are any ghosts here they will have been banished by the power of prayer.

‘The spirits will not triumph over God and when we are here we pray.

‘I am not saying that I do not believe in paranormal goings on, but there is nothing happening here. If the spirit was here he would know to leave.

‘Perhaps there were spirits here many years ago, but they have long gone.’

The mother said friends and family who visit are made fully aware of the home’s spooky past.

While MailOnline was at the house, three men who had travelled across London stood outside.

Mitchell Light, Mohamed Yousif and Alfie Harburn had travelled from Sunbury on Thames, Surrey, to look at the house.

Alfie said:’ I just wanted to come here and look at the house. We know all about 285 Green Street from the films. I really believe that it was haunted.’

Asked if he would like to step inside he shot back: ‘Not ever. I do not want to go inside. It would scare me to death’

Neighbours of the property admit they are bored by people standing outside taking photographs.

‘Everyone knows about the house and its past, but it was decades ago,’ said one neighbour.

‘We see people standing outside all the time. It gets a bit boring but people really want to believe in all that ghost and poltergeist stuff.’
