MTV cancel their EMA awards over security fears and ‘the state of the world’ amid Israel-Hamas war

The MTV Europe Music Awards have been cancelled due to security fears and ‘the state of the world’ amid the war between Israel and Hamas

The 30th annual music event is one of the industry’s biggest awards ceremonies and was due to be held in Paris at the Paris Nord Villepinte on November 5. But a source told the Mail: ‘It’s with a heavy heart that it is being called off due to safety concerns and the ongoing conflict.’

The terror threat in France is currently at the highest level after a teacher was murdered by a 20-year-old Chechen refugee, while police also foiled a similar attack on another school.

Yesterday, six airports across France were evacuated following threats of attacks, while on Monday two men were shot dead in Brussels by a gunman claiming to be a supporter of ISIS.

The EMAs usually feature dazzling performances from the industry’s biggest artists, with the proceedings broadcast live on MTV in over 150 countries.

This year’s event was due to see performances from the likes of Jung Kook, of K-pop icons BTS, rapper Coi Leray, six-time EMA winner David Guetta and former Little Mix member turned solo star Leigh-Anne. Others in the line-up included Anne-Marie, US rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars and Nigerian singer Rema.

It’s thought one factor in the decision to cancel was the reluctance of several US-based stars to take part in the boozy event against the backdrop of the divisive war in the Middle East.

A spokesman for Paramount Global said: ‘Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.

‘The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration.

‘With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024.’

Had the 2023 EMAs gone ahead, it would have been the first time the EMAs had been held in the French capital for 28 years.

The last time Paris hosted the awards, French president Emmanuel Macron was just 17 years old, while designer Jean-Paul Gaultier acted as host.

Last year’s ceremony took place at the PSD Bank Dome in Duesseldorf, Germany, with pop star Rita Ora and her film director husband Taika Waititi stepping into the hosting role.

Taylor Swift led the winners as she took home four awards from an incredible six nominations.

While Bebe Rexha, David Guetta and Harry Styles also won big at the star-studded ceremony.

Other acts joining a night of incredible performances included Ava Max and Muse, as well as Scottish sensation Lewis Capaldi, who made his EMAs debut.

The performances didn’t end there, as Stormzy, GAYLE, OneRepublic, Kalush Orchestra, SPINALL, Äyanna and Nasty C also appeared.

Meanwhile, the annual music ceremony headed to Budapest in 2021.

Since its inaugural show in 1994 in Berlin, the MTV EMAs have moved across 23 European cities, with London the only one to have hosted three times.
