Violent Albanian gangs are targeting British riders and shipping the stolen bicycles to Russia where high-end bikes are hard to get hold of because of sanctions, it has been revealed.

Ruthless bike-jackers are said to be stalking riders in wealthy parts of London such as Regent’s Park, with a spate of thefts taking place between 5am and 7am in recent months before cars are allowed in.

One cyclist riding a £15,000 Pinarello bike was targeted here by robbers on a motorbike who were heard shouting: ‘This is on the list.’

The Times reports that victims have been told by police that the attacks are being carried out by an Albanian gang who are sending the vehicles to Russia amid sanctions imposed on the country following Vladimir Putin‘s invasion of Ukraine

A number of British cyclist organisations, including bike manufacturer Brompton, are understood to be preparing to write to Met Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley in a bid to have more officers patrolling the area.

The Regent’s Park Cyclists group said that more than 30 clubs, which are made up of more than 5,000 members, have resorted to riding to the area in large groups for their own safety.

Scott, 49, who was targeted while riding his £15,000 Pinarello Dogma in December, told The Times: ‘I was riding at about 5am when two guys idled up to me on a motorbike and one said to the other, ‘It’s on the list.’

‘They told me to “get off the f***ing bike” and tried to force me off the road. I fell off and a car stopped and opened the door. I threw my bike in and jumped in and the guys continued to ride around the car shouting, “Get out the f***ing car.”

‘It was pretty scary. They continued to wait outside the car yelling at us and then a security guard came by and they took off.’

The bike thefts resemble the attacks carried out by ‘Rolex ripper’ gangs, who have been targeting wealthy watch owners in London.
